In The kitchen
At The Grocery Store
PLAY WHAT NUMBER IS NEXT: Great when driving. What number is after___? ex. (K) 14, (1) 49 (2) 359
What number comes right before?
- Write 5 sight words on index cards. Tape them up around the house (refrigerator, bedroom door, mirror.) and have your child read them every time he/she passes. Make sure he/she is reading it correctly.
- Have your child find the word on a book page (especially good for words like the, and , is , was, etc.)
- Library story times.
- Have your child name the letters in signs as you pass.
- Write about somewhere they went, something they did.
- Work on is it a question or a statement –is it an asking or a telling.
- Play rhyming games ( at, mat, sat ) it does not matter if it is a made up word-as long as it rhymes (grat)
Computer Activities
- write down items for the grocery list- don’t worry if it is spelled wrong ( for kindergartners- call out the letters for the words)
- write down 5 things he/she did that day
- write things on the calendar

In The kitchen
- Which is larger /longer/thicker/thinner/shorter/heavier/lighter (can be anything a fork and a spoon, two carrots, two different cups, etc.)
- Use a measuring cup.
- Use the word gallon, quart, cup, pint etc.
- Guessing the number of forks then counting the forks then writing the number
- Guessing the number of forks and spoons then counting the forks and spoons writing the two numbers then counting them together and writing the SUM
- Counting a group of items, writing the number, then making a subtraction problem and writing the DIFFERENCE
- Noticing steam from boiling water and talking about matter solid/liquid/gas
- Whole house
- Thermometer –relate the temperature every day to hot/warm/cool to a number (90’s, 60’s ).
- When reading , have your child read the page number.
- For older students, have them find a page number (342).
- Analog clock -K/1 name the hour or half hour. 2nd/ hour to the 5 minutes AND quarter past, quarter to.
- Digital clock-read the time
- Use a ruler /tape measure to measure to the closest inch or cm.
- Flash cards for addition facts 0-10 or 0-18 .
At The Grocery Store
- Compare the sizes and weights of cans-“get the smallest”
- Read the numbers on cans
- Estimate the weight of produce then use the store scale to measure
- Use the word evaporate after it rains
- Board games, great for counting.
- Using games with dice.
